Promoting and Informing Stakeholders on the Use of Living Shoreline Protection

Most Texas coastal landowners have used traditional hard armoring methods for shoreline stabilization, which are not viable long-term solutions and can impede the development of natural shoreline habitats. This effort will create a role for USDA-NRCS and HRI as active participants in the TGLO Living Shoreline Committee in order to expand information sharing regarding barriers and solutions to living shoreline applications; create a Living Shoreline Information Exchange Group that will meet regularly with the goal of informing private landowners on the Texas coast about living shoreline techniques, their use, and design criteria; develop a website with details about the group and additional information to help with implementation; and, finally, identify an optimal location for a demonstration property or community-scale living shoreline using GIS analysis, staff expertise, and engagement of the community and local organizations.

HRI’s Living Shoreline Site Suitability Model has been included on the Living Shoreline website as a key resource on living shoreline planning and development. We will continue to work with TGLO to identify resources and tools that we can contribute to add value to the Living Shoreline website with information gained during this project.
