"Beachcombing" with Jace Tunnell

HRI's “Beachcombing” weekly series offers an opportunity to see strange, fascinating objects and species on the beach, but it also offers a window into the Gulf of Mexico.

The weekly series, hosted by HRI’s Director of Community Engagement Jace Tunnell, educates the public about the impact of marine debris on water and land in the Gulf of Mexico region and how it affects coastal communities. The series promotes the Institute’s mission, research and collaborations, as well as various partner groups and stakeholders.

The series includes short videos that come out each Monday at 1pm on YouTube and Facebook that focus on various items washing up on Texas beaches. The videos are engaging and informative to the general public with science related to the items found on the beach and processes occurring in the Gulf and surrounding bays.

HRI also initiated Beach Finds Friday posts on Facebook and Instagram that showcase photos from Tunnell's recent beach surveys including descriptions on each to help the general public learn about current items washing up on the Gulf coast.

"Beachcombing" highlights can now also be found in a weekly beach report on KEDT 90.3FM Thursday afternoons in south Texas as well as in columns in a growing number of newspapers in the Coastal Bend.
