Through innovative and action-oriented programming, the Gulf Reach Institute develops and implements programs focused on STEM Education for all, the Health of our Gulf and Ocean communities, and Advocacy for the equity and inclusion of underrepresented populations as leaders and decision makers in the protection and conservation of our waters. Our programs like the Gulf Youth Ambassador Program focus on mentoring and providing resources for the implementation of youth community projects across the Gulf including Mexico. While our local Unidos en STEMM Teen Cafes give students the opportunity to learn leadership skills wil exploring the various careers in the STEMM field. These programs help to empower current and future youth leaders as well as strengthen community engagement.


Suraida Nañez-James is the Founder and CEO of the Gulf Reach Institute. She is a marine ecologist, a STEMpreneur, an activist, an ocean lover, a mother, and a wife. The Gulf of Mexico is her home and her community. Her passion for STEM education and science communication has led to over 20 years of experience directing and developing education programming, serving as a communication and media lead on ocean exploration expeditions, as well as studying the ecology and culture of the Gulf. Suraida also serves on several boards and committees including the Vice Chair board position for GCOOS as well as organizations focused on STEM education, and diversity and equity in ocean sciences. She focuses much of her efforts in educating communities on the ecology, economy, and inclusive culture of the Gulf. She loves being outdoors, spending time with her family, and teaching everyone about the ocean.
